Hanes Capel Heolgaled

Yr oedd darn o dir yn Heolgaled lle saif Capel Salem heddiw, a derwen fawr yn y canol ac yma y byddai tyrfa fawr yn cwrdd ar Ddydd Sul i ddifyrru eu hunain. Bancybwl oedd yr enw a'r llecyn hwn. Yma y byddent yn cynnal pob math o chwaraeon o redeg a bocsio i ymladd ceiliogod.

Y gŵr hwnnw oedd y Parchedig Daniel James, gweinidog ar Gapeli Crugybar a Llanwrda, a oedd ar ei ffordd i gynnal oedfa yng Nghapel Isaac.

O dan arweiniad y Parch Lewis Powell, a weithiodd yn galed i godi’r arian,gorffennwyd ar y gwaith o adeiladu’r Capel Salem yn 1817.

Wedi codi’r Capel newydd yma yn 1862, cafodd Parch Dafydd Evans drwydded i gynnal priodasau yn Salem ac yn 1863 priodwyd John Thomas, Yr Hafod, un o bileri’r Capel yn Salem ar y pryd.

Cynhelir oedfaon yn rheolaidd pob Sul fel arfer am 2:00yp ar wahân i’r ail Sul yn y mis pan fydd y gynulleidfa yn addoli yng Nghapel Isaac. Yn achlysurol cynhelir Oedfaon Dwyieithog.

Ar 25 Mehefin 2017 cynhaliwyd Cyfarfodydd Blynyddol ac Oedfa Dathlu Daucanmlwyddiant yr Achos yn Salem.

History of Salem Chapel

Salem Heolgaled Chapel is a Welsh Independent Chapel. It was originally founded in 1817, rebuilt in 1832, enlarged and rebuilt again in 1862 and renovated in 1927. The roof was repaired in 2013.

There was a piece of land in Heolgaled where Salem Chapel stands today, with a large oak tree in the middle and here a large crowd would meet on Sundays to entertain themselves. The name and this place was Bancybwl. Here they would hold all kinds of sports from running and boxing to cockfighting. They had an unexpected experience one Sunday afternoon in the middle of the game. A strange man came past on horseback, and after watching the play for a while, he began to preach under the oak. This drew the attention of the people as they had never seen a minister do such a thing before. That man was the Reverend Daniel James, minister at Crugybar and Llanwrda Chapels, who was on his way to hold a service at Capel Isaac.

Under the leadership of Reverend Lewis Powell, who worked hard to raise the money, the rebuilding of the Salem Chapel was completed in 1817.

After erecting the new Chapel here in 1862, Reverend Dafydd Evans obtained a license to hold weddings in Salem and in 1863 John Thomas, Yr Hafod, one of the pillars of the Chapel in Salem at the time, was married. On 25 June 2017 an Annual Service was held which included celibrating the Bicentenary of Salem Chapel.

Architecture

The Capel is dated 1862, in a what is known as a ‘Simple Round-headed’ style, of the gable entry type. (Coflein) It has an atmospheric interior and is listed Grade II.
